Leaders of more than 20 indigenous groups meeting in Altamira, in
the Brazilian Amazon, have rejected government plans to dam the Xingu
River. In their statement,
the indigenous peoples said the dams would mean "the death of the
river", vital to the survival of present and future generations. The
indigenous leaders have decided to organize a gathering in Altamira to
bring together hundreds of indigenous people, national environmental
organizations and social movements, and international supporters to
oppose dams in the Amazon.
