Symbolic Soil Sent to RusHydro

For the Future of Evenkiya! sends soil samples to RusHydro in opposition to a proposed dam.
The youth organization ‘For the Future of Evenkiya!’, based in Tura, in north central Siberia, wanted to demonstrate to RusHydro their categorical opposition to the planned Evenkiiskaya hydro dam project. Director Viacheslav Repin and Irina Zhukova asked dam opponents living within the projected flood zone for the dam to send them a bit of earth from their native villages. On March 14, Repin and Zhukova sent a package to RusHydro directors containing soil from the villages Nidym, Uchami, Tutonchany, Yukta, Kislokan, and Tura, along with a letter explaining that the soil symbolizes of the land and livelihoods that would be lost if Evenkiiskaya Dam is built, and that the communities these lands support would like RusHydro to leave Evenkiya forever.
