Water is life. It is essential to protect this resource vital to the health of all people, rivers, and ecosystems. As the Policy Program Intern, my work focuses on the dam industry’s approach to sustainable hydropower development. The industry has developed its own voluntary auditing framework for dam construction called the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol (HSAP), which is weak in addressing certain socially and environmentally sustainable criteria. I am researching the 11 corporations that have joined the HSAP to track their human rights and environmental records and assess their commitments to social and environmental standards for future dam projects. A sustainable framework for dam development must incorporate the notion that water is more than just a source of electricity generation; it is the source that people and all life depend upon.
Protecting rivers and defending the rights of the communities that depend on them.
