Every year on and around March 14, thousands of people around the world lift their voices in celebration of the world's rivers and those who struggle to protect them. International Rivers has provided global coordination for this event since it was created during the first International Meeting of Dam-Affected People and their Allies in 1997. The Day of Action for Rivers provides proactive, positive, inspiring proof that our issues are not merely isolated and local, but global in scope.

Rivers link us in so many ways. That’s why the theme for this year’s Day of Action is #RiversUniteUs. We all have a stake in the health of our rivers and together we can elevate the issue of river protection. Be inspired, Get creative, Take action!

Rivers Are in Our Hands

This year we're launching a photo project titled Rivers Are in Our Hands. We have the power to protect these vital lifelines if we join together and speak out. Toward this end, we are asking participants and supporters to write a message on their palm with the hasthag #RiversUniteUs and share it with us! See examples here

Global Events

Exciting events are planned around the globe in honor of International Day of Action for Rivers. Here are just a few – hopefully they will inspire you to plan an event of your own.

  • The 2nd annual Rocky Mountain River Celebration will take place in Boulder, Colorado. The event features several short films, a lively panel discussion, performance art and music – all to celebrate and support rivers in Colorado and beyond.
  • Futaleufú Riverkeeper will host a film night, demonstration and a community float down the river to bring awareness to dam threats facing the Fataleufú River in Patagonia, Chile.
  • International Rivers staff, partners and local activists will march to consulates in San Francisco to demand protection of World Heritage Sites threatened by dams. Also, we will hold a River Happy Hour to celebrate rivers with our Bay Area supporters. We’ll be showing a slideshow of actions from around the world, so don’t forget to send us your event photos!
