About the event:

The session will examine what the World Bank Group can learn from Nam Theun 2 in Laos and how those lessons apply to major hydropower projects now being developed in Tajikistan (Rogun) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (Inga). It will also assess the WBG’s new hydropower approach paper and whether it adequately addresses lessons from past projects, emerging risks and the growing impacts of climate change, particularly in light of recent events in Nepal.

Our Ask is simple. The World Bank should pause new support for large hydropower until it shows it has truly learned from its failures and provides remedy to the people harmed. For Inga 3, that means addressing the harm left by the existing Inga dams, disclosing the project’s financial risks to the Congolese public, and seriously weighing the alternatives that could actually bring power to Congolese homes.

The Bank says it has learned from the past. Bangkok is its chance to prove it.
