To celebrate the importance of rivers and the movement for their protection, and to recognize actions of resistance and innovation in the different biomes of Brazil, the Coalition for the Permanent Protection of Rivers in Brazil invites you to participate in “O Canto das Águas: For the Protection of Clean and Free Rivers in Brazil”, on March 22, World Water Day, at 5 pm, Brasília time. The event has the support of International Rivers, the Forum on Climate Change and Socio-Environmental Justice, MAB, MAPAS, SARES Manaus, OLMA, Observatório das Águas (OGA), Fórum das Águas Manaus, SOS Mata Atlântica, CERSA, Federal University of Minas Gerais, Committee for the Defense of Amazonian Life in the Madeira River Basin-COMVIDA, Tapajós Vivo Movement, Nupélia-PEA-UEM and the Association for the Social and Environmental Management of the Triângulo Mineiro (Angá).
Brazil is the country that has the largest amount of rivers and fresh water in the world, with 12% of the total existing on the planet. Rivers, springs and aquifers are essential living spaces to maintain the biosphere in Brazil and in the world. In addition, they provide sustenance, food and leisure for populations and are especially important in the spirituality of indigenous communities and other traditional communities, which recognize their intrinsic value. However, our rivers are threatened by vast pollution, as well as degradation from deforestation, lack of sanitation and activities, such as mining and the construction of infrastructure projects.
In this context, several civil society organizations, social movements and representatives of the academic community came together at the end of last year to create a Coalition for the Permanent Protection of Rivers in Brazil. The Coalition also joins the international movement, which is moving towards recognizing rivers as deserving special protection and even rights holders. In Brazil, we also observe innovative initiatives, such as the creation of popular basin committees, community management and restoration and municipal laws that recognize the Rights of Nature.
The event will bring videos highlighting the need for actions to protect and restore rivers in different regions, and a table with participants who have different and essential views on the topic.

O Brasil é o país que possui a maior quantidade de rios e de água doce do mundo, com 12% do total existente no planeta.Os rios, nascentes e aquíferos são espaços de vida essenciais para manter a biosfera no Brasil e no mundo. Além disso, proporcionam o sustento, alimento e lazer de populações e têm especial importância na espiritualidade de comunidades indígenas e demais comunidades tradicionais, que reconhecem seu valor intrínseco. No entanto, nossos rios são ameaçados pela vasta poluição, bem como pela degradação advinda do desmatamento, falta de saneamento e atividades, como a mineração e a construção de obras de infraestrutura.
Nesse contexto, diversas organizações da sociedade civil, movimentos sociais e representantes da comunidade acadêmica se juntaram no fim do ano passado para criar uma Coalizão pela Proteção Permanente de Rios no Brasil. A Coalizão também se une ao movimento internacional, que caminha no sentido de reconhecer os rios como merecedores de proteção especial e, até mesmo, detentores de direitos. No Brasil também observamos iniciativas inovadoras, como a criação de comitês populares de bacia, gestão e restauração comunitária e leis municipais que reconhecem os Direitos da Natureza.
O evento irá trazer vídeos destacando a necessidade de ações para proteção e restauração dos rios em diversas regiões, e uma mesa com participantes que possuem olhares diferenciados e essenciais sobre o tema. Junte-se a nós e faça parte deste movimento!
